The mastering on this CD edition is lovely. I had read this album gets varied responses / reviews. As well, the selections on the 'Janis' 3 cd set (longbook, from 1993), were certainly a mixed bag.
However the mastering on this cd - from the late 80s - is but correct for the textile. Non too treble-y, not too pushed.
This shows the importance of good, counterbalanced mastering as opposed to the "Listen TO ME!!!" mode of mastering prevalent on way too many releases of old and new music from the early on-mid 1990s onwards.
More subtle mastering like this is almost a lost art. A pity, every bit it makes this album, while not her best musically, quite a joy to listen to.
Sounds great. Simply mine did non include the expected anthology title sticker.
Epic record. Booklet of this edition is very simples: half-dozen pages, iii of them advertizement other artists. No lyrics. CD print is but black text over lyrics. CD sounds very well.
Killer sounding record. Clear bass, perfectly pressed. Highly recommended!! Word
Fantastic pressing. The all-time I have heard so far. !!!
Excellent release with practiced quality sound and the vinyl itself is very well made with no noticeable defects.
This is where the freak flag of Janis is starting to be flown at half mast...gone is the ballroom screeching and guitar mangling of BB&THC and minstralling is the new society...hamboning and pleading are now being required by the Record Company and unfortunately Janis has no recourse but to comply.
Don't get me wrong, you lot need this disc but not as much every bit the first BB joint and the Sex Dope Cheap Thrills double is a must...

This is one of those insane records, a record where Janis just sounds and then practiced it makes you wanna cry. But mind to the number "Try," a quick step 16 beats to the bar, a song so precision-ally metronomic it will sweep back images of Stax Records, yet and then stutteringly beautiful that Janis is dancing in a world of her own.
That existence said, her band is downright awful hither, downright out of fundamental, defective the cardinal essence of quality arrangements, however somehow here on Kozmic Blues, Janis has never sounded amend, and the band she's hooked up with are doing the righteous thing for her. That existence said, there's no way these cats tin last for more one tape, because Janis deserves better, she deserves it all, where far better musicianship would but enhance her entrancing musical visions, staggering her audience to the dorsum walls, as all of the space in front of Janis is need to give her room to breath, room to roam and cook away the brume you lot walked into the show with.
What Janis is laying downward here is psychedelic soul driven dejection of the first magnitude. Kozmic Dejection reflected a change and direction from the 2 albums she recorded with Big Brother & The Holding Company in San Francisco, this fourth dimension making her way eastward with the Kozmic Blues Band, settling into a New York City studio a mere fourteen months after Cheap Thrills clued in the world as to what this woman had to offer. While much of the music delivered here is composed of embrace fabric, what Janis brings to the table with her R&B influences fits her similar a glove, yet yet I'grand smitten to say that if she'd a improve band, this album, every bit good as it is, would have blistered listeners to the core of their being.
At that place are many who volition infer that the tape is an acquired tasted, and while Kozmic Blues will forever remain in the shadows of Pearl, information technology's an exemplary effort that never fails to right all of my wrongs, even with all it leaves to be desired. As to the original vinyl itself, the pressing is remarkably good, property up for years with super definition and an emancipating-ly costless and airy audio; with the new 180 gram edition sounding fifty-fifty better. The album art itself is striking, markedly differing from the album jackets past other females artists of the day, virtually announcing front end and center what is held within, showing that Janis was here to sing, with the vibrant colours of the jacket bespeaking the revolutionary intensity and rawness of her stage performance.
*** The Fun Facts: The first edition of this record independent only the album championship on the spine of the jacket, later the anthology title was added to a sticker designed by R. Crumb and affixed to the compress-wrap. Finding one of those R. Crumb stickers is an incommunicable feat … I'm just glad I never revolved the shrink-warp, where it still contains the sticker.
Review by Jenell Kesler
Janis is magnificent and I dearest her in this setting. The music's lost about of its psychedelic border in favour of a rhythm and dejection flavour and so it's more than Memphis than San Francisco ( I could imagine Otis Redding sing this selection) but she proves that she is so much more than only a rock singer. This is my favourite Joplin studio anthology. Also, Mike Bloomfield takes guitar on Maybe, I Skillful Human being and Work Me Lord - bonus
